Walnut Lap Desk on Stand
England. Circa 1860.
This diminutive lap desk was the ultimate in desk portability in its day. Made in beautifully grained walnut and strengthened by brass straps and corner mounts, it conceals a useful interior. Opening it up reveals a dished pen tray flanked by space for inkwells. Beneath the writing slope is a small letter well that also has a “secret” section that hides a pair of small stamp drawers. The stand is new.
